AUDIT & ASSURANCE

Audit & Assurance

There is a negative perception of auditing in industry, however, in order to thrive, organisations must embrace the positives that come from auditing. Whether performing a management system gap analysis audit, an internal audit of in house systems or audits on suppliers, all audits form a crucial role in the continual improvement of an effective management system.

With increasing emphasis on compliance against the standards for health, safety, environment and quality, along with several other operational standards, it is increasingly important for organisations to pay due attention to industry standards.

Audits are generally performed against the following ISO standards:

  • Quality (ISO 9001)

  • Environment (ISO 14001)

  • Health and Safety (ISO 45001)

  • Information Security (ISO 27001)

  • Business Continuity (ISO 22301)

  • Energy Management (ISO 50001)

  • Oil and Gas (ISO 29001)

  • Supply Chain (ISO 26000)

  • Risk Management (ISO 31000)

  • Health and Safety (OHSAS 18001)

In addition to these, other specific audits include:

  • CDM Regulations for Construction

  • Offshore Safety Case Regulations

  • Regulation 5 Duty of Licensee

  • Safety Case under the COMAH Regulations

Gap Analysis and Pre-Certification Assessments

If an organisation has concerns related to the effectiveness of its systems, either to meet their internal requirements or to meet the requirements of a certification audit, they should commission a gap analysis.

Gap analysis assess whether existing systems are compliant with current standards and also if they are implemented and used effectively. Pre-certification assessments will point out the areas that need attention when preparing for a certification audit.

Internal Audits

The internal audit process is essential for an organisation to understand the health of its systems before certification and client audits identify failures. This individual activity or an entire audit support package can, with the required training, be performed in house or can be outsourced to specialist, qualified and experienced service providers. The inputs to this activity range from scheduling, preparing and undertaking the audits through to reporting, non-conformity tracking and monitoring the effectiveness of corrective and preventative actions.

Supplier/Contractor Audits

Supplier/ contractor audits are an essential part of the Supply Chain Process, either as part of tendering activities or simply as part of ongoing contractor/ supplier management. The resources for this type of audit generally need to have a wider range of skills and experience to deal with the broad spectrum of disciplines and sectors involved. This may include (but is not limited to):

  • Safe Systems of Work

  • Safety Management Systems

  • Environment Management Systems

  • Diving Management Systems

  • Integrity Management Systems

  • Competence Management Systems

  • Project Management

  • Construction

  • Engineering

  • Manufacturing

  • Marine

  • Supplier Management Systems
